Boys Like Him by thatotherperv—Spike/Buffy. 1950s human AU. Buffy’s a good girl. Spike’s a bad bad boy. She wasn’t supposed to like boys like him.
Why this fic? The mood of this fic captures the time period perfectly without making it feel dated. Sweet and incredibly sexy even though barely a scrap of clothing is removed, all within a world of rich, recognizable characters. A must read for any Spuffy fan!
Crash and Burn by nautibitz—Spike/Buffy. Buffy's a barely legal Bel Air brat, Spike's a reckless, heartbroken punk. When they crash into each other on a mountain road, sparks fly.
Why this fic? This is such an enjoyable read. Some of the best irritable spuffy banter I’ve ever seen in human AU.
Criminal Games by ashlee—Spike/Buffy. William ‘Spike’ Reed is the most successful art thief on record – and he’s never been caught. As one of the most powerful men in the country, he has managed to elude arrest for years while still maintaining a prominent status. When FBI Agent Buffy Summers is assigned to go undercover to capture him, she’s entered a game that she’s not sure she can win.
Why this fic? This is the adversarial-but-attracted Spike-and-Buffy dynamic at its best…that kind of fic just does not get written enough in spuffy human AU. Very engaging fic.
Doubled and Redoubled by vikingprincess and virtual personal—Spike/Buffy. When British Intelligence Agent William Spike finds himself inexplicably attracted to CIA operative Bill Summers on a mission in Taiwan. Trouble is, he failed to read the file on Summers’ undercover disguise.
Why this fic? I mean, come on. Spike thinks she’s a *man* at first. This is Spuffy for Slashers. And it’s about spies. This fic is made of cool.
Goodnight, Saigon by spikeslovebite—Spike/Buffy. A disillusioned soldier, determined to end it all in the killing fields of Vietnam. A heartbroken young woman, devastated by the loss of her dreams. One rainy night in Los Angeles, fate brings them together.
Why this fic? This fic has managed to win over multitudes of spuffy-schmoop skeptics. …okay, four of us. But we’re super skeptical. Sweet and solid.
Meet the Pratts and sequel by verity watson—Spike/Buffy. When Buffy moves to LA to start over with her friend Willow, she meets a certain punk singer…who also happens to be a vampire.
Why this fic? Many times we can reduce Spike’s attraction to Buffy to one thing: she’s Chosen. The fact that they are each predator *and* prey is a powerful draw in their relationship, but this fic does a fantastic job of making the case that Spike loved Buffy the Girl as much as he did Buffy the Slayer.
Older by nautibitz—Spike/Buffy. Spike is Buffy's new stepfather and they can't help but have a torrid, sekrit affair and fall crazy in love.
Why this fic? Two words: fandom classic. This is the story that inspired a thousand older/younger fics. The storytelling is elegant and tight…I enjoy that she skims over some of the obligatory exposition in favor of keeping to the emotional meat of the story. The result is naughty and angsty and heartbreaking and wonderful.
