Barriers by evilmaniclaugh—Liam/Wil. Set in 1944 Germany. Liam is a British officer in a POW camp…Wil is the German medic who tends him.
Why this fic? What I love about this fic is the Bogart-era romanticism of their relationship…which is only made more apparent by the starkness of the setting.
Belief (PDF) by inca—Spike/Liam. The rich son of an Irish shipping merchant is sent to America, bribed with a mansion by his father to take part in the family business. When it becomes apparent that his new home comes with supernatural baggage, he employs the services of a man named Spike.
Why this fic? The supernatural elements in this fic are interesting and novel, and I love the sexual dynamics in this fic. Liam is such a…guileless slut, and Spike is nearly prudish in an endearingly prickly way. It shouldn’t work, but it really really does.
Bent Justice (PDF) by toobusy2write—Angel/Spike. Spike is an undercover agent sent into prison to bust a corrupt warden, but when he takes on Angel, the block’s heavy, sparks fly.
Why this fic? It’s a true fandom classic, and you’ll see why…spot-on characterization, complex plot, a great cast of characters…and it’s as massive as it is entertaining.
The Birthday Special and its sequel by spankspike and thatotherperv—William/Angel. William always set aside his sexual orientation so as not to disappoint his mother. Now she has passed on, and he’s still a virgin at 30. He seems slated to remain that way forever until he’s propositioned by an aggressive hustler.
Why these fics? spankspike opens up a universe that explores William's loyalty and love for his mother and his first shaky steps toward self-fulfillment. thatotherperv takes up the tale, and furthers our understanding of what these two isolated people could mean to each other, if they don't let circumstances and their own harsh realities keep them apart.
Closer by felisblanco—Liam/Will. Will is a lonely club-goer looking to make a connection…but an encounter with a dominating stranger might turn out to be more than he bargained for.
Why this fic? Felis writes Grade A angst. This fic has interesting things to say about the emotional complexity of power play and the gray areas of consensuality.
Differences Aside by felisblanco—Spike/Liam. A painfully shy teenager, Liam is shocked—and not a bit terrified—the day bad boy Spike takes an interest in him.
Why this fic? The fumbly sweetness between these two is totally beguiling to me…which only makes the dark edge even more of a sucker punch.
Assorted Drabbles by nyghtpet—Angel/Spike. A set of drabbles that tackle a number of scenarios: soccer dads grabbing stolen moments, a businessman with a hired hooker, a priest seduced by a rebellious youth, teenagers rough-housing, and a doctor that can’t resist a breach of ethics with one drugged-up patient.
Why these drabbles? They’re little nuggets of happiness and kink. It’s not easy to establish a human reality in such a brief time, and she gets the job done beautifully.
The Drive-in by thatotherperv—Angel/Spike. Angel and Spike have been best friends forever. Now Spike has other ideas. Window-steaming ensues.
Why this fic? This is hot, funny, and sweet. thatotherperv explores what Angel and Spike mean to each other, despite their posturing. Their undeniable attraction for each other is inevitable, no matter what 'verse they're in.
Eyefucks Leading to Cross-eyed and Bow-legged States by eyezrthewindows—Angel/Spike. Spike gets dragged to a club opening by his friend Faith. He’s not thrilled…but things work out in his favor.
Why this fic? Because it’s hot. Because she captures that club pick-up tension nicely. And because sometimes, names are an afterthought when you really need to be fucked.
Home by thatotherperv—Angel/Spike. Angel and Spike grew up together in the foster care system. When Spike ages out of the system and finds himself homeless, there’s only one person he knows will take him in. As long as he doesn’t give him a choice.
Why this fic? As usual, thatotherperv takes a unique starting point, and uses it as a means to uncover deeper issues between Angel and Spike. This is a classic HAU story: funny, sweet, deep, and amazingly hot.
It’s an Ache by denied heaven—Angelus/William. A secret summer romance spirals out of control, leaving both boys scarred and damaged years later.
Why this fic? It’s an interesting look at the Angelus/William dynamics, motivations, and underlying emotions, and the style by which she comes at the story is unusual and beguiling.

Lover’s Spat by thatotherperv—Angel/Spike. Spike is tired of being Angel’s dirty little secret.
Why this fic? Oh, this fic is devious. Beautifully executed and angsty, with a wonderful twist.
Lucky by estepheia—Angel/Spike. Angel is a corrupt cop whose life is at rock bottom when he catches a thief in his home.
Why this fic? Because the only thing more deliciously ambiguous-dark than s2 beige!Angel is one that's human. And Spike, as always, is pretty when he bleeds.
Mainline (PDF) by inca—Spike/Liam. Liam is a shattered coke addict in rehab when he meets Spike. Spike is sexy and powerful…intoxicating and addictive.
Why this fic? The fic itself is *addictive*. sucks you right in, and she pulls off the plot device gorgeously. And the ending is pure brilliance. One of my favorite fics of all time.
Pity Fuck by meretrix—Angel/Spike. It's Angel's first pride. He takes a road trip to San Francisco, because he's eighteen now, and out of the closet, and it's something that you have to do once in your life. He meets someone at the parade. Someone dangerous and older. *waggles eyebrow*
Why this fic? Because it’s hot. Because I said so. Because the only thing better than Queer as Folk is QaF-turned-Spangel.
Spin the Bottle by thatotherperv—Angel/Spike. The boys get cornered into doing something they really don’t want to do. They really really don’t…right? This fic is not sexually explicit.
Why this fic? The boys are adorable when they try to pretend that they hate each other. Teenage fumbling. Awkward discoveries, and sweet revelations.
Strangers Have the Best Candy by spankspike—Spike/Liam. Spike, a streetwalker in Dublin, is having a slow night until he stumbles upon a boy peeking in on a back-alley sex show.
Why this fic? Okay, I confess, this fic hits every last one of my kinks. It’s just so naughty, down to the eeeevil twist.
Street Hassle by meretrix—Angel/Spike. A stand-alone sequel to meretrix’s Angel/Xander fic "Pretty Baby," this fic follows Angel out of drug rehab. When he runs into his old friend Spike, will the lure of his old life be stronger than his desire for a new one?
Why this fic? Not only is it an intriguing story in its own right, but this fic can also be read as an allegory for canon: Angel’s soul, the lure of family, blood as addiction. The spangel dynamics are spot-on. Plus, it’s hot.
Subspace by toobusy2write—Angel/Spike. Days after Spike turns eighteen, he gets sucked into a whole new world by a mysterious man, but is it one he's ready for?
Why this fic? Forget that the concept is kinktastic. This fic has so much *heart*, and it drags you right into Spike's discovery of his place in the D/s world…the high and the vulnerability, the risks and rewards.
Summer Lovin’ by felisblanco—Angel/William plus a variety of other pairings. When summer hits, new-kid William is awkward and lonely…until he goes to the lake one afternoon. Boy-kissing, pot-smoking, and a near orgy ensues.
Why this fic? It’s seriously hot, and it’s seriously endearing. She does a great job of capturing that terrifyingly exciting summer romance sweetness…where time moves slow and anything is possible.
Vellum (PDF) by inca—Spike/Angel, Gunn/Angel minor. Angel, a stripper deeply indebted to his wealthy boyfriend, begins an affair with another stripper.
Why this fic? The first time I read this fic it broke my fucking heart. After I got over that trauma, I realized that in addition to being a heart-breaker, it was also brilliant.
